Clergy, Staff & Leadership

The staff and leadership here at ODEC is comprised of men and women who love, care, and pray for every single person in the church. If you have questions for any of our staff, feel free to reach out by email, or call our church office to speak with them.

  • Bob Randall

Bob has been rector of Old Donation since September 1, 2004, coming to us from the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast (Alabama). Bob's passion is shaping a community that understands God's vision and has the tools for making that become reality in their own lives and the lives outside of the Church. The Church needs to be making the world a better place. 20 years of business and engineering helped him understand regular people and real life.

He is a graduate of Virginia Seminary in Alexandria. Before that, he earned two engineering degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He and his wife, Chris, share a joyful spirit and a love for the people of Old Donation.

Bob and Chris have two grown married children, four granddaughters and two grandsons.

  • Ashley Urquidi

    Associate Rector

Ashley graduated from Seminary of the Southwest and was ordained at Old Donation on July 14, 2015. She and her husband, Ben, have two young boys, Levi and Joel, and a little girl, Leia.

Ashley has a degree in Psychology from Hood College in Frederick, MD, where she also worked as a youth minister prior to attending seminary, and did youth work on the parish and diocesan levels. Though no longer directly involved in youth ministry, Ashley is passionate about helping children (and adults) find their unique place in the church, and loves to create connections and community. In today’s world, she believes the church has a prominent role to play in speaking truth in love and showing grace, and strives to do those same things in her ministry.

  • Genevieve Nelson

The Rev. Genevieve Nelson joined our staff in the Fall of 2019 to lead our Outreach and Mission. She served as a deacon at a parish in Norfolk for three years after graduating from the Diocesan Program for Formation for Diaconal Ministry. She works part-time with us and part-time as the chaplain to college students at the ODU Canterbury Center.  Her passions include introducing and opening up faith to young people, as well as racial and environmental justice.

Genevieve is a graduate of the University of Colorado and formerly worked in the Norfolk library system. She and her husband, Wayne, have two beautiful sons.

  • Fred Poteet

    Priest Associate

Fred studied at Virginia Theological Seminary, Oxford University, and St. Georges College, Jerusalem, and was ordained at Old Donation in 2005. He pastored the parishes of St. John's, Portsmouth and St. Stephen's, Norfolk, and served on the Bishop’s staff of Southern Virginia and Colorado. He rejoined the Old Donation team as Associate Rector in 2014.

Fred and his wife, Mary, have lived in Virginia Beach since 1973. They have two sons: Brian who lives in Denver, and Scott, who lives in San Diego, and are grandparents of three remarkable namesakes: Josh, Leah and Hannah. Prior to ordained ministry, Fred headed a communications company he founded in 1979.

  • Paul Hudgins

    Choirmaster and Organist

Paul Hudgins has been Organist/Choirmaster for Old Donation since September 1999. A native of Mathews, Virginia, Paul served his home parish of Christ Episcopal Church (Kingston Parish) from 1973 – 1975 before attending James Madison University. Music ministry is a second career for Paul, as he has been employed for 25 years with Sentara Healthcare, and is Director of Patient Financial Services. Paul’s passion at Old Donation is liturgy planning and he recognizes himself as a traditionalist and Anglo-Catholic at heart, with a slight “curve” in the direction of some contemporary music. Paul previously contemplated life in a monastic religious order and attended multiple retreats at both St. Anselm’s Benedictine Abbey near Washington, DC, and Holy Cross Trappist Monastery in Berryville, VA (Cistercian order of the Strict Observance).

  • Leslie Fenter

    Gathering Musician Leader

Leslie graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance and from ODU with a masters in Music Education. She is both The Gathering Band Leader/keyboard player, and since 1997, the music teacher for our Day School. At Catholic High School she directs a Chorus of 30+ students. Leslie shucks raw oysters for our Annual Oyster Roast, occasionally sings for our 8am service and for baseball games at Harbor Park. Confirmed at Old Donation in 1989, she is mother to adult sons, Jake and Ted, and wife to John.

Administrative Staff

  • Gretchen Hood

    Parish Administrator

Our Parish Administrator is often the first person with whom you will speak if you are trying to catch up with one of the staff, or if you want to get something done. She leads the administrative team at Old Donation, is the primary person for communications, and generally keeps us all on the same page.

Gretchen has lived all over the world, moving with her husband, Jeff, a career officer in the Air Force, and their two sons, Blair and Peter. They most recently lived in Israel and Rome, two very interesting places for Christians. Gretchen’s family includes an Episcopal priest and she has been very active in church life, including jumping in with both feet since arriving at Old Donation. We are thankful to have her on our team.
